Aortic Valve Disease: A Growing Concern with Age
By Dr. Dhiren Shah – Senior Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Marengo CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad, India.

Aortic stenosis—when the aortic valve becomes narrowed and restricts blood flow from the heart—is a condition that becomes increasingly common with age. It often affects individuals above 70 or 75 years and can lead to symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness, or extreme fatigue if not addressed in time.

For elderly patients who are high-risk or unfit for traditional open-heart surgery, a breakthrough treatment called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) offers a safer alternative. TAVR/TAVI is a minimally invasive procedure that allows us to replace the diseased valve through a small incision, usually in the groin, without needing to open the chest.

I have personally seen how this technology is changing lives—patients recover faster, with less pain, fewer complications, and a quicker return to normal activities.

If your parents or grandparents are showing signs of valve-related heart disease, don’t wait. TAVR/TAVI could be the right solution for them.
